Bristol

Bristol Yachts, a pioneering American company in the production of fiberglass sailboats, emerged as one of the early leaders in the industry. Established in 1964 and closed in 1997, the company played a significant role in the development of commercial sailboat manufacturing.

In 1955, Clinton Pearson and his cousin Everett Pearson initiated their fiberglass sailboat construction venture in Seekonk, Massachusetts, just across the state border from Rhode Island. The enterprise, known as Pearson Yachts, swiftly expanded, employing a large workforce within a year. To address financial challenges stemming from rapid growth, the cousins secured funding by selling equity in Pearson to Grumman Allied Industries in 1961.

In 1964, Clinton departed and acquired Sailstar, a struggling sailboat manufacturer based in West Warwick, Rhode Island. He relocated the company to the vacant Herreshoff boatyard. Under the design expertise of Carl Alberg, the first vessel produced by the company was the Bristol 27. In 1966, Clinton rebranded the enterprise as Bristol Yacht Company, phasing out the Sailstar brand. The boatyard eventually settled on Popasquash Road in Bristol, Rhode Island, where it encompassed a sizable barn situated on Clinton's property, which also served as his residence. Adjacent to the barn, a small marina and travellift completed the facilities.

Unfortunately, the company faced financial difficulties and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 1997, leading to its closure.
