The Ship Carousel: Flexible Berths for Sailing Heritage
What is the Ship Carousel?
The Ship Carousel is a unique initiative offering owners of historic ships -including tugboats, cargo ships, and classic sailing vessels- the opportunity to make use of temporary berths in various harbors across the Netherlands.
These ships may remain at one location for up to three months before moving on to another harbor. This rotation system promotes the mobility of maritime heritage and enriches participating harbors with well-maintained, characterful vessels—each with its own story.
Who Can Participate?
There are several participation options within the Ship Carousel:
- Donor without a ship
Ideal for enthusiasts of historic vessels who do not (yet) own a ship or are in the process of restoration. For just €50 per year (2025), you can register as a donor.

Do you own a seaworthy historic ship you’d like to display in different harbors? Become a skipper-donor for €100 per year (incl. a one-time €50 registration fee in 2025). You'll receive the official annual flag and Ship Carousel banner.
Register as skipper » - Berth Manager
Harbors that wish to contribute to the preservation of maritime heritage can register as berth managers. A great opportunity to support cultural heritage and attract more visitors.

Participating Harbors
The Ship Carousel is active in many Dutch cities, including:
Rotterdam, Den Helder, Culemborg, Amersfoort, Zwolle, Zutphen, Willemstad, Vlissingen, Nijmegen, Dordrecht, Medemblik, Steenwijk, Blokzijl, and more.
Each harbor provides unique facilities and actively supports the preservation of historic ships.
