Do I need to register my high-speed motorboat in the Netherlands?
On most inland waterways in the Netherlands, registration of a high-speed motorboat is required by law. Registration is handled by the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority). The same rules apply to personal watercraft (PWC), such as jet skis.
What is considered a high-speed motorboat?
A high-speed motorboat is classed as a small craft that:
- is less than 20 metres in length overall (LOA), and
- is capable of speeds exceeding 20 km/h.
Personal watercraft (PWC) are included in this definition and are therefore subject to the same regulations.
Where is registration required?
Registration is mandatory for a high-speed motorboat on almost all Dutch inland waterways. Registration is not required on:
- the Eems/Dollard;
- the Western Scheldt (Westerschelde);
- the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal (Kanaal van Gent naar Terneuzen);
- the Border Meuse (Grensmaas) — the Meuse between Maastricht and Roosteren (Limburg).
Please note: local by-laws may still impose a registration requirement on these waters.
Registering a high-speed motorboat
You can register your high-speed motorboat online with the RDW, including first-time registration in the Netherlands.
Registration certificate and registration mark on board
While underway, you must carry the registration certificate on board. The certificate shows the registration mark. This mark must be displayed on both sides of the craft, amidships (mid-length). Displaying it on the bow is also permitted.
Further details: Registration mark and registration certificate (RDW)
Requirements for the registration mark
- The registration mark must be durable and clearly visible.
- The colour must contrast strongly with the background.
- Letters and numbers must be at least 150 mm high and 100 mm wide; stroke thickness must be at least 20 mm.
- For personal watercraft (PWC), different minimum dimensions may apply: at least 100 mm high, 60 mm wide, and 15 mm stroke thickness.
Lost or missing registration certificate
If you have lost your registration certificate, you can apply to the RDW for a replacement registration certificate for your motorboat.
Selling a high-speed motorboat
If you sell your high-speed motorboat, the registration must be terminated or transferred to the new owner. The RDW website provides information on the procedure for deregistration and transfer.
